As a forefather of the early '80s West Coast thrash-metal movement, Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine has earned a rightful place in rock history. So what better way for Marshall to show its appreciation than to create the Dave Mustaine signature 1960DM 280W 4x12 speaker cabinet? Every single piece of the 1960DM is cut to size and shape in the Marshall woodshop, using precision equipment and machinery. Finger joints and specialist wood glue are used to join together the top, base, and side pieces to form the basic cab structure, which is then placed inside a radio frequency press. Clamps within the press ensure that the cab will be square and true while the radio frequencies create strong and durable joints that will stand up to the harshest punishment. Once out of the huge cab cooker and before being hand sanded, the baffle board is fixed into position and hand sealed, giving the 1960DM a more focused, aggressive response when complete. Next stop is the covering department, where the skilled Marshall staff apply the slate black carbon fiber effect, vinyl covering. Hand picked by Dave Mustaine himself, this Kevlar-inspired material sets the 1960DM apart from everything else on the market and also ensures Dave's cabinets look like they could withstand a bomb blast. All covering material is cut to size and shape by hand, something only a trained eye can do, and is testament to the expertise required in this area. The finishing department then takes responsibility for adding the internal wiring, handles, protective corners, and the diamond punched, steel kick grille—the first to be featured on a full production 1960 speaker cabinet. This is manufactured in-house from mild steel, before being powder coated and fixed into position. A Marshall logo and special silver Dave Mustaine signature plaque complete this fearsome cab frontage. As Dave will testify, tone is critical. The speakers chosen were Vintage 70-watt G12-V30 Celestions, after many hours of painstaking testing, with each one capable of delivering thunderous, yet tight and controlled sonics. The hand sealed cabinet back ensures that bone-crunching sound is projected forward, further aiding the tonal response and impact of these mighty 280-watt cabinets.
